Body Positivity is a hot topic in American culture today. Just listen to Lizzo, you can\u2019t help but be inspired to be a star and touch the sky! Embrace yourself, love who you are and accept all the things that define you. These are important messages we need to hear. Why then, do we continue to see plastic surgery statistics rising? Surgically, breast augmentation, liposuction, tummy tucks, and Brazilian butt lifts remain the top desired procedures. Non-surgical procedures such as Botox, fillers, laser, and microneedling have become common with patients both male and female ranging from young to old. Is this because we can love ourselves but still want to improve on ourselves? Do we believe self-empowerment starts with owning those desires and any action we take to address those changes we choose to pursue? Are we finally able to accept an individual\u2019s decision as to how they define beauty?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Social media has created an environment of self-evaluation. We document everything and put it out there for the world, opening ourselves up for encouragement, criticism or acceptance. The ability to make changes, with either a minor spa treatment or a surgical cosmetic treatment is now readily available. There are multiple sites for viewing procedures and a patient\u2019s before and after photos. Surgical advances have made procedures more affordable with minimum downtime. Non-surgical treatments have continued to evolve and create another alternative to surgery with less cost and no downtime. Embracing yourself now means you can own your desire to improve upon yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n

Confidence starts with believing in you. If your definition of beauty means you desire change, then I encourage you to:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Find a board-certified plastic surgeon who you feel comfortable talking with and understands your desired aesthetic results. Be open and honest with the surgeon.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Be specific and realistic when considering any procedure or treatment. Understand the results and the time needed to achieve the look you desire.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Consider the cost and downtime. Do these realistically fit into your life at this time?<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Self-reflection is important and the reason you want to make a change should be recognized. Embrace change in a healthy manner and recognize who you are and what you are trying to achieve. The results may fix the physical imperfection but may not touch the emotional connection that was attached to it.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
