Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) | Pittsburgh, PA
Although many people crave a flat stomach, the reality is that sometimes, whether due to age, pregnancy, weight loss or weight gain, people have excess stomach fat and skin. Depending on how much excess skin and how old a person is, exercise is not always the only solution to this issue. If your excess stomach skin concerns you and you’re looking to tighten and firm your tummy area, schedule a tummy tuck consultation with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jeffrey R. Antimarino.
What is a Tummy Tuck?
An abdominoplasty, otherwise known as a “Tummy Tuck” is a common procedure that tightens the abdominal wall and stomach appearance. Even individuals of otherwise normal body weight and proportion can develop an abdomen that protrudes or is loose and sagging. The most common causes of this include:
- Aging
- Heredity
- Pregnancy
- Prior surgery
- Significant fluctuations in weight
These factors can also lead to increased laxity and possibly separation of the muscles of the abdominal wall causing a “pooch” in the lower abdomen.

What to Expect During Your Tummy Tuck at Bellissimo Plastic Surgery

A tummy tuck procedure is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. A full tummy tuck requires a horizontally-oriented incision in the area between the pubic hairline and belly button. Once the excess skin is lifted, the underlying weakened abdominal muscles are repaired to flatten the abdomen. Then, the excess skin is removed to complete the recontouring of the abdominal wall.
Other procedures such as breast augmentation, liposuction, and arm lifts can often be combined with the tummy tuck procedure. These combinations do not add downtime to the procedure.
Tummy Tuck Recovery
A tummy tuck requires approximately 2-3 weeks of downtime. Drains are routinely used to remove normal, postoperative fluids in the first 1-2 weeks. Patients wear a supportive abdominal binder for approximately 3 weeks.
Exercise and most activities are resumed by 3 weeks. For more information on tummy tuck results, check out our “Tummy Tuck Before and After” page.
